Who is PRELEX suitable for?

  • For people older than 40 years who have a combination of long-sightedness and need reading spectacles

Operační sál 2 pro nitrooční operaceWhat are the advantages of PRELEX?

  • PRELEX is currently the only method which has the potential to ensure seeing distant objects and nearby ones without spectacles.
  • It permanently removes the risk of grey cataracts arising
  • It permanently corrects dioptric deficiencies, which almost never change over time.
  • If unsatisfied with the results of PRELEX, it is possible to change the multifocal intraocular lens for a standard monofocal one.

What is the essence of the PRELEX method?

One of the refractive lens exchange variations that implants a special multifocal intraocular lens which provides a simultaneous image of distant objects and those at normal reading distance. PRELEX - presbyotic lens exchange, is a method that can considerably reduce a patient’s dependence on spectacles.

After the operation, more than 60 % of patients can discard their spectacles for long and short-sightedness. For 30 % it is necessary to wear spectacles occasionally (when driving at night, when reading under harsh light). Only 10 % of patients will need to use their spectacles daily. PRELEX is not suitable for every patient. The level of satisfaction with the results of the PRELEX method depends on the previous deficiencies, on the patient’s personality type, on the kind of work burden and the type of preferred recreational activities. It further depends on the level of motivation to limit the need for spectacles, on the willingness to accept difficulties during the transitional period and the ability to comprehend the specific quality of simultaneous bifocal sight. The most satisfied patients are those with a pre-operational combination of long-sightedness and presbyopia. Patients with low and medium krátkozrakostí have certain reservations about the quality of sight.

A condition for the success of PRELEX is a resting pupil width greater than 3 millimetres (patients with very narrow pupils are less able to use the refractive dioptric zones of the multifocal intraocular lens placed off centre more). As a rule PRELEX is not suitable for patients suffering from other eye illnesses. Patients with good long vision without spectacles and those that have to work frequently in poor lighting and in the dark are less satisfied with the results of PRELEX. Adjusting to the new state is, as a rule, conditional on the operation being performed on both eyes and perfect adaptation to the new state can take up to 3 months.

What are the disadvantages of PRELEX?

  • In dim light and in the dark patients may see circles around lights after PRELEX
  • It is an intraocular operational treatment
  • Under certain light conditions (intense sunlight on the beach, etc.) it may be necessary to wear spectacles to see close up
  • 1 to 3 months to adapt to the new simultaneous bifocal vision system
  • PRELEX is not suitable for patients who demand absolutely quality sight and for those with frequent nocturnal activities.
  • PRELEX is less successful for patients with low and medium short-sightedness.
