Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. Since 1988 type A has been used in aesthetic medicine.
How it works:
Botulinum toxin type A binds to the pre-synaptic receptor at cholinergic nerve fibre points, blocking the release of acetylcholine at the synaptic join and thus preventing nerve transmission.
The effect of botulinum toxin is fully reversible. Nerve excitation is renewed when the nerve fibres grow back, as they “grow round” the blocked nerve ends.
Principle of using botulinum toxin in aesthetic medicine:
When various emotions are expressed (laughing, smiling, frowning) the facial muscles contract, which constricts the skin, thus forming dynamic wrinkles and lines in various parts of the face. In particular wrinkles emerge on the forehead or at the root of the nose, or crow’s feet appear on the outer corners of the eyes. With time these “dynamic” wrinkles and lines deepen and become more emphatic and fixed. They thus contribute to a change in appearance, giving the face a more mature and older look.
Treatment using botulinum toxin can smooth out these dynamic wrinkles, thus lending the face a younger and fresher look without the need for surgery, without scarring and without convalescence following the operation.
Procedure during application:
Botulinum toxin is applied to the muscles with a thin needle in very small doses. It then temporarily interrupts the neuromuscular transmission of excitation to the mimic muscles, thus relaxing them. This results in the skin being “turned off” and the wrinkles being smoothed out. The treatment is performed on out patients, takes a short time and does not require any tests or preparation whatsoever.
The effects of botulinum toxin take about 2 – 3 days before being noticeable, and reach their full extent after seven days. As a rule the effect lasts for 3 – 6 months after the first application, which is why it is suitable to repeat the application. Repeating the application prolongs the effect. We recommend repeating the application approx. 2 – 3x per year for the best and most prolonged effect.
Botulinum toxin is equally effective for both men and women.
Most frequent usage of botulinum toxin in aesthetic medicine:
Horizontal wrinkles on forehead
Glabella = deep wrinkles at the root of the nose (between the eyebrows)
Crow’s feet on the outer corners of the eye
Small wrinkles around the mouth
Smokers’ wrinkles
Wrinkles on the chin, neck
Slight facial asymmetries
Usability of the method:
Just as with other special corrective methods the application must be indicated by a competent professional physician i.e. a trained specialist who will best advise you and apply a good quality preparation.
At our clinic we apply the preparation BOTOX, a very pure form of botulinum toxin type A, which is one of the strongest and most effective.
